Hardin County is named for Colonel Joseph Hardin, who blazed a trail through Southwest Tennessee's thick woodlands in the early 1800s to map 2,000 acres of rich land on the east side of the Tennessee River. Hardin County is nationally known as the "Catfish Capital of the World", hosting the National Catfish Derby each summer.
Hardin County temperatures allow for perfect year-round activities. Hardin County boasts an average annual temperature of 61.9 (40.7 in January & 81.7 in July) with an average rainfall of 44.85 inches with direction, prevailing winds from the South Southwest.
Savannah, Tennessee is a bustling community located in the heart of Tennessee’s Southwest Region. It is nearby to some of the most scenic areas in Tennessee and also lies on the beautiful Tennessee River. Nearby Pickwick Lake offers peace and serenity from the breathtaking views seen traveling across the TVA dam as well as an abundance of freshwater fishing, boating and scenic water falls. Savannah is the county seat with a population of about 7,600.The population of Hardin County is about 26,000.
Why do over two million visitors pass through Savannah and Hardin County each year?
- Hardin County is home to the historic Civil War Battle of Shiloh and offers historic districts, museums and a host of annual festivals. The Historic Indian Mounds are also located
in the center of the park.
- The Cherry Mansion built in Circa 1830 by David Robinson. It is the oldest structure in Savannah and is located on the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River and served as headquarters for General U. S. Grant in the spring of 1862. Grant’s breakfast was interrupted by couriers with news that the battle of Shiloh had begun.
- The Tennessee River Museum offers exhibits of chronicle prehistoric times, life of the Mississippian mound builders, the tragic story of the “Trail of Tears,” the Civil War on the River, the Golden Age of Steamboats, and the Tennessee River today.
- Buford Pusser Home. The actual house that Buford was living in at the time of his death, with original furnishings and memorabilia located in nearby Adamsville.
- The Savannah Historic District contains some of the finest examples of Southern architecture and provides a pleasant two mile drive or stroll through yesterday.
- Hardin County’s other River City- Saltillo. Saltillo is a nice, little town located 30 miles north of Savannah. Another town in Hardin County where the river is a huge draw for tourism.
- Pickwick Lake is well known for its fishing and hosts several small mouth and large mouth tournaments throughout the year. Other sport fishing includes sauger, crappie, white bass, striped bass, spotted bass, and bluegill. Boating, water skiing, wave-running, sailing and swimming, the beautiful waters of Pickwick Lake await you! Pickwick Lake gives new meaning to fun in the sun!
HARDIN COUNTY SCHOOLS- Hardin County has a total of ten schools: a comprehensive high school serving grades 9-12; a middle school for grades 6-8 located near the high school; a school for grades K-8 located west of Counce on Highway 57; and seven elementary schools throughout the county. Golf Courses in the area include Pickwick Landing Resort State Park, Shiloh Falls Golf Course, Bear Trace at Ross Creek Landing, Shiloh Golf Course in Adamsville and many other well known courses.
State Parks in the area include Pickwick Landing State Park & Inn, Tishomingo State Park and JP Coleman State Park and is nearby to the Natchez Trace.
